Algorithms for Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Algorithms for Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator
- Add the whole numbers (if possible)
- Add the numerators
- Keep the denominator the same
- Simplify/Reduce the fraction (if possible)
Algorithms for Adding Fractions with Different Denominators
- Find a common denominator by finding the LCM (Least Common Multiple) of the two denominators
- Change the fraction or fractions to have the same denominator
- Follow the steps for adding fractions with the same denominator.
Algorithms for Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator
- Subtract the numerators
- Keep the denominator the same
- Subtract the whole numbers (if possible)
- Simplify/Reduce the fraction (if possible)
Algorithms for Subtracting Fractions with Different Denominators
- Find a common denominator by finding the LCM (Least Common Multiple) of the two denominators
- Change the fraction or fractions to have the same denominator
- Follow the steps for subtracting fractions with the same denominator
Canned Food Drive
Student Council is sponsoring a fundraiser from Monday, December 12 through Wednesday, December 21. We will be collecting canned foods, boxed foods, and money to be donated to the Little Sisters of the Poor. The class with the most items collected will have a doughnut party.
$1.00 counts as two canned food items.

Homework for Monday, December 12
Quiz tomorrow
Quiz will cover:
1.) Adding fractions with the same denominator
2.) Adding fractions with different denominators
3.) Subtracting fractions with the same denominator
4.) Subtracting fractions with different denominators
Students have algorithms (rules) for each of these topics on purple paper in their math binder (reference section).
